Gnome children, affectionately known as sprouts, grow from the very gardens they will one day tend. Because of their recent connection with the soil, sprouts such as Gnubber, "Gnubbs" to his friends, are permitted ample time for fun and games.  Running through fields with pinwheels, playing a lively game of lawn darts, or tracking snail trails through the forest.
All of this helps to prepare them for gardening and guarding their plots of land.
